A SPACE TO REMEMBER KRISHEN
Krishen Jit, one of the most important figures in the arts of Malaysia
and Singapore, passed away on 28th April 2005.
In her obiturary, Kathy Rowland, the editor of Krishen's collected
essays, An Uncommon Position, observed: "Krishen Jit was loved. I don't
use the word in its laudatory, symbolic sense. I use the word with in
all its emotional complexity. Actors who had endured his gruelling,
harsh persona in the rehearsal room, playwrights whose words he
dismantled in search of some new theatre idiom, production crew whose
resolved to work in theatre was shaken by his imperious manner --
everyone has a 'Krishen story', which they wore proudly like battle
scars. So many of us loved him, and so many of us depended on his
presence, his time, his counsel, his creativity, his wisdom."
For the concluding event of this year’s Septfest, friends and loved
ones of Krishen, from both sides of the Causeway, gather to share
memories and reflections about the man and his 40-year career as an
actor, theatre director, critic, scholar and educator. Speakers include
Ivan Heng, Huzir Sulaiman, Claire Wong, T K Sabapathy, Leow Puay Tin, T
Sasitharan, Ekachai Uekrongtham, Remesh Panicker, Ray Langenbach, Ivy N
Josiah and Charlene Rajendran. Come and join us as we remember and
honour Krishen.
