Marco Gillies

Marco Gillies is a lecturer in the Department of Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London. After completing his PhD at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory in 2001 he worked as a researcher at University College London (including UCL@Adastral Park, a collaborative research centre with BT plc.), before joining Goldsmiths in 2008. His research is in the broad areas of computer animation, graphics, virtual reality and human movement tracking. He has worked for many years with interactive 3D virtual characters, particularly on creating expressive, non-verbal behaviour, and is particularly interested in the role of performance and data in creating virtual characters. His latest work has been on using machine learning methods to infer AI models from motion capture data of performance. His work has been applied in many areas, including virtual reality performance, psychotherapy and education. He is co-director of the Creative Computing degree programme at Goldsmiths, a computing degree which encourages students to approach computing as a creative arts practice. The degree programme has been innovative in combining a technical computing curriculum with creative practice.
